Long-time friends making a difference, one sandwich at a time

Local Subway Charity Day

Thursday, October 12, 2017

In 1979, when Linda Yip immigrated to Colorado from Taiwan, she met her first friend, Helen Newcomb, who also immigrated from Taiwan several years earlier. The two became fast friends and, after Linda met and married Jimmy, the two reamined close friends throughout the years. They both had sons in the mid-1980s, Nathan and Ryan, who would also become childhood friends.

In 2001, Nathan Yip, then just 19 years old, was involved in a car accident that took his life. In order to turn their tragedy into positive action, Jimmy and Linda founded the Nathan Yip Foundation to provide educational support to kids all around the world.

Just a year later, Gary and Helen's son, Ryan, was invloved in a car accident himself. Ryan spent close to a year recovering in the hospital and had a lot of time to reflect. His near-fatal accident gave him a new outlook on life and Ryan was more determined than ever to make a difference in his community.

The Newcomb family now owns a collective 29 Subway stores throughout Denver, making it the largest franchisee in the southern half of the state. Business has been good to them, and now they're using it as an opportunity to give back to the local community. This year, these longtime friends have launched a new partnership, donating 25% of all sales* from their 29 Subway stores to the foundation on one special day - Thursday, October 12th.

Funds raised from this one-day event will be used to support schools, students, and teachers in rural communities throughout Colorado.

Building Schools

A safe school structure is the first step to providing students with a brighter future. We renovate and build schools in some of the most remote areas in China.

Building Teachers

Teachers are vital to student learning and development. We provide ongoing training to ensure that teachers are getting the support they need and that students are learning effectively.

Building Students:

We evaluate the needs of students in each community and provide targeted support, giving students the resources they need and allowing them to get the most out of their education.

Ways to Participate in Subway Charity Day

We asked our volunteers and friends for ideas for participating in this Subway Charity Day, and below are some of our favorites:

  1. Baby Steps: Buy a Subway sandwich (don't forget the chips/cookies and drink) on October 12, 2017.
  2. Let's Rock: Lunch/dinner out is always fun -  Invite your friends and family to a participating Subway store for a sandwich party* on October 12, 2017.
  3. Master Level: Buy a few extra Subway sandwiches. Give them to friends, co-workers, or hungry folks in need of a smile and a meal on October 12, 2017.
